The European Central Bank kept its policy rates unchanged on Friday. The Eurozone recorded third-quarter gross domestic product growth in the 0.8% to 1.1% range. Germany's economy expanded by 1.3% in the same period, slightly above expectations.

The ECB decision meant no 25-basis-point hike was implemented. The deposit facility rate remained at its September level. The main refinancing and marginal lending rates also stayed unchanged.

Eurozone gross domestic product grew within a 0.8% to 1.1% band in the third quarter. The expansion was modest compared with earlier periods. Statistical releases placed the region's growth firmly in that range.

Germany recorded third-quarter GDP growth of 1.3%. The German economy therefore expanded slightly faster than expected.

Analysis

Leaving rates unchanged signals that the ECB judged current monetary conditions sufficient to support the modest Eurozone expansion without further tightening.

The Eurozone's 0.8%-to-1.1% growth rate indicates a gradual recovery but leaves limited room for error; any slowdown could revive calls for policy easing.

Future policy choices will hinge on how inflation evolves and whether the modest growth trajectory persists. Should inflation remain elevated, the ECB may reconsider its stance, while a persistent slowdown could prompt a more accommodative approach.
