On Saturday 10 October 2026 voters in three of the Czech Republic's largest cities chose new mayors. Tomáš Portlík was elected Mayor of Prague, Lukáš Hájek won the mayoralty in Liberec, and Richard Vereš secured the office in Ostrava. The outcomes were confirmed on the same day.

In Prague the contest featured several prominent candidates. Portlík prevailed over Petr Hlaváček, Jan Hušbauer and Adam Scheinherr. His win ended the previous lineup of contenders.

The Liberec race pitted Lukáš Hájek against Tomáš Rec. Hájek emerged victorious, replacing Rec as the city's chief executive. The result shifted the municipal leadership in the northern region.

Ostrava's mayoral election saw Richard Vereš facing Jan Dohnal. Vereš defeated Dohnal to become the new Mayor The transition handed control of the industrial city to Vereš.

Analysis

The concurrent installation of new leadership in Prague, Liberec and Ostrava creates an opportunity for coordinated municipal policy across the country's major urban centres. With all three mayors taking office at the same time, inter-city initiatives can be negotiated without the friction of staggered terms. However, the degree to which the three administrations will align remains uncertain.

Prague, as the national capital, often sets the tone for national-level urban policy. The new Mayor will need to navigate relationships with the central government and regional bodies.

In Liberec and Ostrava, the change of Mayor introduces new leadership in regions with distinct economic profiles, tourism and industry respectively. Their ability to implement change will depend on council composition and fiscal constraints that are not yet known.
