On Saturday 10 October the next mayors of six major Czech cities were confirmed. Miroslava Ferancová was named Mayor of Olomouc, Roman Zarzycký of Plzeň, and Lukáš Hájek of Liberec. Richard Vereš took the mayoral post in Ostrava, Tomáš Portlík in Prague, and Jakub Hruška in Brno.

Both municipalities rank among the Czech Republic's largest urban centers.

Miroslava Ferancová took the mayoralty of Olomouc while Richard Vereš became Mayor of Ostrava. Olomouc and Ostrava are also counted among the nation's biggest cities. Their selections were confirmed on Saturday.

Tomáš Portlík assumed the Prague mayoral office and Jakub Hruška was chosen for Brno. Prague and Brno complete the list of six largest cities now under new leadership. The decisions were finalized the same day.

The six cities now have confirmed mayors as of Saturday. These changes occur ahead of the 2026 municipal elections.

Analysis

The coordinated confirmation of new mayors in six of the country's largest cities creates a notable shift in local political landscapes just before the municipal election cycle. With all major urban centers under fresh leadership, parties and interest groups will need to adjust their strategies to engage with the incoming administrations.

Each new Mayor inherits the administrative responsibilities of a city that plays a significant role in regional economics and culture. Their policy priorities, staffing decisions, and budget allocations will directly affect local services, infrastructure projects, and investment attraction efforts.

The timing of the appointments may influence voter perceptions ahead of the 2026 elections, as residents evaluate the incoming leaders' early actions.

Uncertainty remains regarding how the new mayors will cooperate with regional and national authorities, especially on issues that require coordinated funding or legislative support. Their ability to navigate these relationships will shape the effectiveness of municipal governance throughout the upcoming election cycle.
