Pete Fry elected mayor of Vancouver
Pete Fry won Vancouver and Brenda Locke won Surrey.
The municipal elections held across British Columbia on October 18 delivered a sweep of New mayors. Voters in the province's largest cities chose Pete Fry in Vancouver and Brenda Locke in Surrey. In the lower mainland, Rob Howard took the mayoralty in Richmond while Dylan Kruger became mayor of Delta. West Vancouver elected Mark Sager.
Ron Cannan won Kelowna while Victor Cumming captured Vernon. Mike O'Reilly was chosen for Kamloops and Simon Yu took Prince George. Eric Woodward secured Langley Township's mayoralty. On Vancouver Island, Zac de Vries became mayor of Saanich.
Jack Crompton secured the mayoralty in Whistler and Harshan Ramadass prevailed in Fernie. Gary Sulz was elected mayor of Revelstoke, and Patrick Johnstone won in New Westminster. These results added to the broader shift in municipal leadership across the province.
In the Vancouver Island region, Leonard Krog was elected mayor of Nanaimo. Craig Hodge emerged victorious in Coquitlam, completing the election cycle a day earlier. The New Mayoral roster now spans the province from coastal resorts to interior towns.
With the exception of Coquitlam, which finalized on October 17, all Mayoral races concluded on Sunday.
Analysis
Major urban centers such as Vancouver and Surrey now have mayors who campaigned on different platforms than their predecessors, which could alter the focus on issues like housing, transportation, and climate action.
Smaller communities, from Whistler to Revelstoke, also saw New mayors, suggesting that local concerns ranging from tourism management to rural services are likely to receive renewed attention. The diversity of winners indicates varied political alignments across the province, which may affect collaboration among municipalities on shared initiatives.
